"Where, after all, do universal human rights begin? In small places, close to home — so close and so small that they cannot be seen on any maps of the world."

Frequently asked questions

What people most often ask us before joining.

Who can join and is there an age limit?

Membership is open to everyone from age 14, regardless of nationality. From 14 to 17 you become a junior member, from 18 a regular member.

How much does it cost to join?

The annual membership fee is set by the National Board based on age: typically €10 for under-18s, €20 from 18 to 25, €35 from age 26. Formal membership also ensures insurance coverage during activities.

What does an activist actually do?

In group meetings we plan campaigns, train on human rights and organise local actions. At public events — info stalls, petitions, awareness initiatives — we inform the public, collect signatures for appeals and support fundraising for the movement.

Do I need any special skills?

No. Grassroots activism requires no prior skills: groups welcome and train newcomers. Those with specific skills (legal, communications, research) can also apply to national Working Groups or themed Task Forces through dedicated calls.

Will I get any initial training?

Yes. You won't be left on your own: more experienced activists in the group will support you and explain how things work. Amnesty Lazio also has the official mandate to provide ongoing training on human rights, activism techniques and current campaigns.

Can I take part remotely?

Yes. Meetings are often hybrid or online, and some activities — communications, research, translations — are done entirely remotely. Amnesty Italy has formally enabled online participation at every level of the organisation.

What if there's no group in my city?

You can join an Italia Group (any age) or a Youth Group (14–25) in a nearby area. If none exists, at least 5 members are needed to start a "Group in formation": the Circoscrizione supports and trains them for 4–18 months before official recognition. Write to us and we'll begin together.

Can I be an activist if I belong to a political party?

Yes, simply being a member of a party, union or movement is not an obstacle. However, to safeguard Amnesty's independence, you cannot simultaneously hold leadership roles in Amnesty and in political parties, and those identifying as members cannot make public voting declarations.

Can I stop whenever I want?

Yes, at any time. Simply send a written resignation to your group or to the national Supporters Service; otherwise your membership automatically expires if you don't renew the annual fee.

If I can't be active, how can I still support Amnesty?

You can sign appeals, donate, allocate your 5×1000 to Amnesty International Italy, and take part in initiatives as a supporter without joining a group. Even without time for grassroots activism, your financial support helps preserve the movement's independence.
